🏛️ Overview

The George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology in Târgu Mureș (UMFST) is a unique case in the Romanian medical landscape. Founded in 1948 as the Târgu Mureș Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy, it has borne since 2018 the name of the Romanian-born Nobel laureate in physiology and medicine (1974). Its 2018 merger with Petru Maior University turned it into a multidisciplinary institution with seven faculties, reaching well beyond medicine alone.

What makes it special today: UMFST is the only Romanian medical university to have opened a campus abroad — the UMCH in Hamburg, Germany (since 2019), where students can complete part of their studies. More importantly, in April 2026 it obtained ARACIS accreditation to open a French-language medicine stream, a brand-new programme of 100 places that will welcome its first cohort in the 2026–2027 academic year.

This is a significant opportunity for French speakers: a brand-new stream, a teaching body recruited specifically for it (probably including staff from other Romanian UMFs and from French-speaking countries), and the “first cohort” effect, which can mean more personal supervision, smaller numbers and particular attention from a university with every reason to make the launch a success. The flip side: everything has to be built. The stream has no track record, no alumni, no course materials proven in French, and there may be organisational adjustments along the way. Students in that first cohort will need to be adaptable.

The university also benefits from a multilingual tradition unique in Romania (Romanian, Hungarian, English and now French), and a modern campus including a 4,000 m² advanced research centre.

📋 Programmes available by language

Târgu Mureș is quadrilingual — Romanian, Hungarian, English and, since April 2026, French. But the international offering remains concentrated on medicine: neither pharmacy nor French-language dentistry exists here.

The Hamburg campus (UMCH) adds 200 places in English-language medicine on German soil — a Romanian degree delivered in Germany, unique in Europe. Fees there are appreciably higher than in Târgu Mureș and follow a separate schedule.

💰 The pricing surprise of 2026: the new French-language stream is charged at €8,000/year, against €10,000/year for the English stream at the same university — and against €10,000/year at Cluj. Over six years, the gap with Cluj reaches €12,000. For medicine taught in French, that is currently the lowest fee in Romania, matched only by Constanța (which teaches in English only).

The flip side, to weigh honestly: you would be the first cohort. No alumni, no course materials proven in French, an organisation that will find its feet as it goes. The university has an obvious interest in making the launch work — but adaptability will be part of the deal.

Veterinary: UMFST has no veterinary faculty, despite its expanded remit into science and technology since the 2018 merger.

Structure of the programme (French stream): The programme will follow the standard Romanian medical curriculum (6 years, 360 ECTS), identical to the Romanian and English streams, taught entirely in French:

• Years 1–2: basic sciences (anatomy, cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, histology)
• Year 3: clinical introduction — semiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology
• Years 4–6: clinical rotations in the Târgu Mureș hospitals and at foreign partners

Distinctive features:

• UMFST has a campus in Hamburg (UMCH) where international-stream students can potentially complete clinical semesters. This “dual campus” model is unique in Romania.
• A Simulation and Practical Skills Centre on the Târgu Mureș campus.
• A partnership with the Institut Français in Cluj-Napoca for cultural and language support for French-speaking students.
• An Advanced Medical and Pharmaceutical Research Centre (4,000 m², 400+ items of research equipment, opened in 2015).

Type of admission: on application + interview

For the new French stream, applications go through the admission.umfst.ro platform. The exact process for the French stream was not yet fixed at the time of writing (July 2026), but it should follow the English-stream model: assessment of the school record followed by a motivational interview.

New for 2026: the George Emil Palade Smart Hospital is announced for 2026, with surgical robotics, diagnostic AI and digitised patient records. If the timetable holds, students in the new French stream could have access to cutting-edge facilities.

For students at the UMCH campus in Hamburg, the university maintains agreements with 30+ German hospitals, as well as institutions in Spain, Italy and Malta.

From which year: clinical training begins in year three, following the standard Romanian model.

Quality of placements: sound in Târgu Mureș, with a good patient-to-student ratio in a human-scale city. The hospital network is smaller than in Bucharest or Cluj, but sufficient for a complete training. The Hamburg connection is a distinctive asset: students who complete clinical semesters at UMCH have access to German hospital infrastructure, known for its quality. The well-equipped Simulation and Practical Skills Centre partly compensates for the limits of the local hospital network. The Institute of Cardiovascular Emergencies and Transplantation is a regional reference centre where students can observe advanced procedures (heart transplants, complex valve surgery).

🏠 Student life in Târgu Mureș

Târgu Mureș (150,000 inhabitants) is a mid-sized Transylvanian city, halfway between Cluj and Brașov. The atmosphere is quieter and more family-oriented than in the larger university cities.

Housing:

• Hall of residence: ~€80–150/month
• Flat share: €150–250/month per person
• Studio flat: €200–350/month

Estimated monthly cost of living: €450–650. Among the lowest of Romania’s medical university cities.

Transport: city buses, with everything within walking or cycling distance. Târgu Mureș airport (low-cost flights to some destinations). Cluj airport is 2 hours away by car or bus.

Atmosphere: a peaceful city with a rich multicultural heritage (Romanian and Hungarian). Modest nightlife. Ideal for students who put study ahead of partying. The French-speaking community is still emerging — you would be among the pioneers.

✅ Recognition

The UMFST George Emil Palade degree is recognised automatically throughout the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC. The French stream, though new, awards the same state degree as the long-standing streams. The April 2026 ARACIS accreditation guarantees the programme’s compliance.

The UMCH Hamburg model likewise awards a Romanian degree recognised across the EU — a peculiarity that lets students study in Germany while obtaining an automatically recognised European qualification.
